No. 1 Parkland Softball Adds Wins Over Lakeland CC and Lake Michigan

The Cobras take down both the Lakers and the Red Hawks in five innings

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 1 Parkland College Softball team picked up two shutout, five-inning wins at The Spring Games on Wednesday, March 13th, defeating Lakeland Community College 11-0 and Lake Michigan College 8-0 to extend the Cobras' current win streak to 14 straight games. The Cobras (21-3) caught fire early against the Lakers (0-7), outhitting them 13-3 while taking advantage of five Lakeland errors, and Parkland powered past the Red Hawks (3-2) in game two with consistent offense, scoring in four of the five innings and winning on a Ryleigh Owens walk-off RBI single. Pitchers Karley Yergler (13-2) and Owens (2-0) earned wins on Wednesday, while second baseman Emma Mason (4-5, HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI) led the team in scoring with back-to-back big games.
 
Up next, Parkland will continue The Spring Games against Cuyahoga Community College and Lake Michigan College on Friday, March 15th. First pitch versus the Triceratops (5-1) is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET before a rematch against the Lake Michigan Red Hawks at 1:15 p.m. ET.
 
Game 1: No. 1 Parkland College 11, Lakeland Community College 0 (5 innings)
 
Parkland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and a two-out, 2-RBI double from Karley Yergler (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI). Sophomores Maddie Reed (1-1, 2B, RBI, R), Mia Ruder (1-2, R), and Emma Mason (1-2, RBI, R) each drove in a run in the 2nd, and the Cobras knocked in four more in the 3rd to take an early 10-0 lead.
 
Sophomore Ryleigh Owens (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 8 K) allowed just one base runner in four innings, striking out eight in her first start this season. Katy Hendricks (1-1, RBI) lined an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the 4th inning, and freshman Claire Black (1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 K) pitched a scoreless top of the 5th in the 11-0 win.
 
Game 2: No. 1 Parkland 8, Lake Michigan College 0 (5 innings)
 
The Cobras struck first in the 1st inning, taking a 2-0 lead on Emma Mason's third home run of the season. The team added two runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a Mia Ruder (1-2, RBI, R) sacrifice fly, as Kailee Otto (1-2, R) scored on an error, and starting pitcher Karley Yergler (1-2, HR, 2 RBI) launched a 2-run home run, her 6th, to put Parkland up 6-0 in the 3rd.
 
First baseman Alisha Frederick (1-3, 2B, R) doubled to begin the bottom of the 5th, Mason (3-3, HR, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R) knocked her in, and Ryleigh Owens (1-1, RBI) lined a walk-off RBI single to win on runs 8-0.
 
In the circle, Yergler (4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9 K, BB) struck out nine of the 15 batters faced in the win, and Owens (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, K) sat down all three she faced in her 16th appearance of the season.
