Parkland Men’s Basketball Lose 75-71 to National Park College

The Cobras start 0-2

Box Score WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – The Parkland College men's basketball team took a late lead over National Park College in the team's second game in the Greyhound Classic on Saturday, November 5th, but the Cobras couldn't close out the Nighthawks in a 75-71 loss in West Memphis.

"It was a tough, hard-fought game by both teams," first-year head coach John Bowler said after the loss. "We knew this tournament would be a tough one to play in; you play two national tournament level teams on the road in their backyard. These situations will make us better as the season goes along."

The Cobras (0-2) trailed the Nighthawks (3-0) early in the game on Saturday afternoon, but neither team could pull away from the other in the first half. Parkland called a timeout with a two-point lead and 10:37 to go until halftime, and the Cobras extended their lead to 28-22 on a three-pointer from Jared Hankins with 6:19 remaining. Parkland College took its largest lead of the first half, 37-30, after Hankins went 2-3 from the line with 3:13 left, but National Park closed out the half on a 9-2 run and the two teams went into halftime tied at 39.

The second half started like the first did, with both teams trading baskets and hanging around. The Cobras trailed 49-45 with 13:29 to go, but the team tied the game at 52 on a Brylan Phillips three-pointer just two minutes later. A 10-4 run, capped off by a Daniel Reed three, with under four minutes remaining put Parkland on top 71-67 with 1:23 to go, but the team could not hold on down the stretch as the Nighthawks buried a late three and hit their free throws while the Cobras went cold in the 75-71 loss.

"I'm proud of how hard our guys played in such a short turnaround, especially with not having everyone healthy," Bowler continued. "Still, I think there's a ton of room for improvement. We'll go to the film and continue to correct our mistakes."

Up next, the Cobras will travel to Olney, Illinois on Saturday, November 12th for a match up against Olney Central College. Tipoff against the Blue Knights (0-1) is scheduled for 7:00 PM
