CHAMPAIGN, Ill. ā Parkland College Athletics has named sophomore volleyball standout Shay McMillen and sophomore men's soccer stud Gustavo Poli as the August 2025 Athletes of the Month, recognizing their exceptional performances and leadership.Ā
McMillen, an outside hitter from Wheaton, Illinois, currently ranks No. 4 nationally in both kills and points for NJCAA Division II volleyball. Head Coach Cliff Hastings praised her growth, noting, "Shay is an excellent example of working to improve one's freshman year to enjoy the fruits of their labor in their sophomore year. She is so strong in her net play, and she's really figuring out the kind of leader she wants to be. She's doing a great job being confident and trying hard to focus on herself coupled with focus on team success as well."
On the soccer field, Poli, a midfielder from Salvador, Brazil, has emerged as a key playmaker, ranking No. 11 nationally in goals, No. 1 in assists, and No. 9 in points. Head Coach Mark Sikora highlighted his leadership, saying, "Gustavo has picked up the mantle of sophomore leader with both hands. His selection as a team captain by his teammates was out of not only their respect for his ability to bring players together but also as being one of the hardest workers on the field. We would be nowhere as successful at this point of the season without him."
Together, McMillen and Poli embody the excellence, dedication, and leadership that define Parkland College Athletics.
