Cobras, Illinois Central share M-WAC Title

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Parkland men's soccer team recorded its sixth shutout of the season, and third in the last four matches, with a 5-0 victory against the University of Indianapolis Reserves on Tuesday night. Sophomore forward Jesus Reina scored twice, and assisted a third, as the Cobras improved to 9-2-1 on the season.

Box Score

"This is always a good game to play so our guys can get a sense of the NCAA Division 2 level, especially one that is a nationally strong as Indianapolis," said head coach Mark Sikora. "We started very strong and showed well for ourselves throughout the match, dominating a previously unbeaten reserve squad. Another strong outing by the whole team defensively, and some timely goals, helped us win this one going away."

Having concluded its conference play last week against Lincoln Land with a 3-1 record, the Cobras will finish the season as Co-Champions of the Mid-West Athletic Conference after Illinois Central defeated John Wood, 4-2, on Tuesday night. The conference title marks the fourth straight, and fifth in the last six seasons. Parkland defeated Illinois Central, 3-2, on September 18.

Parkland scored three times in the first half, and twice more in the second half, while putting 10 shots on goal to Indianapolis' three. Reina's five points – two goals and one assist – tied his season high from September 2 at home against Hawkeye.

"It was very enjoyable to see Jesus Reyna have a breakout game with a few goals and an assist," said Sikora of the sophomore forward. "As we get closer to the end of the regular season we will be relying heavily on his talent and leadership."

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Cobras scored twice in three minutes. In the 21st minute, freshman midfielder Tyler Arias scored a goal in his second straight match off a pass from sophomore Mohamed Belakhoua who recorded his first assist of the season. Two minutes later, Reina scored the first of his two goals with sophomore Zachary Gowlett's team-leading 11th assist.

In the closing minutes before the half, Gowlett got on the other side of the scoring combo, as freshman Jakob Schoon set up the left wing for his fourth goal of the season and the Cobras' third of the half in the 43rd minute.

Reina and the Cobras opened the second half by removing any remaining doubt in the outcome when Reina netted his second goal of the day, and seventh of the season, in the 49th minute.

Parkland's defense continued to hold Indianapolis scoreless, only allowing two shots on goal in the second half, before freshman Francisco Andrade added in a fifth goal with two minutes left in the match off a pass from Reina. The goal was Andrade's third of the season, while the assist marked the fifth point of the match by Reina.

The Parkland men's soccer will begin a three-match homestand to end the regular season on Saturday, October 13, against the College of Dupage at 2 p.m. central time. Southwestern Illinois comes to town on October 17 (4 p.m.) followed by the University of Illinois Club Team on October 21 (2 p.m.).
