CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Parkland women's soccer team suffered a tough loss in their final home match of the season, surrendering an overtime goal to Trinity University in the 95
th minute that broke a scoreless tie. With the setback, the Cobras drop to 4-9 on the season.
A scoreless 90 minutes resulted in Parkland's first overtime match of the season, but Trinity converted a break away opportunity into the match's only goal at 94:20.
An even match from start to finish, Parkland and Trinity University traded shots throughout the match with the Cobras, each team putting 11 shots on frame. Trinity held the advantage in corner kicks, taking six to Parkland's one.
Despite a scoreless first half, Parkland created a number of quality scoring chances, owning a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. In the opening ten minutes, the Cobras' midfielders twice got the ball to
Kayla Liggett on the left wing. With both opportunities, Liggett put a shot on goal but were turned away by Trinity goalie Sarah Morgan. After another shot by Liggett three minutes later,
Beatriz Meneghin put a pass from
Mylena Do Prado on goal in the 14
th minute. Liggett put her third shot on goal in the 25
th minute, and
Ali Hosey added another shot in the 40
th minute, but again weren't able to convert.
Dahlgren fended off three Trinity shots on goal and two corner kicks to keep the score level through the opening 45 minutes.
Parkland and Trinity again traded shots in the second half, but neither was able to take advantage of the scoring opportunities. The Cobras put seven shots on frame, while Trinity placed six of their own. Trinity held the corner kicks advantage again in the second half, taking four to Parkland's one.
Meneghin offered the Cobras' best scoring chances of the second half, putting pressure on the Trinity goaltender on four different occasions. After a shot on goal seven minutes into the half, Meneghin took a 30-yard shot just under the crossbar, but Morgan deflected it over the crossbar to force a corner kick. Following a third attempt by the sophomore midfielder with seven minutes remaining, Meneghin again got deep into Trinity territory in the closing seconds and fired a shot off the right side that was deflected off the goalie. Sosa corralled the rebound, but her put back attempt bounced off the left post.
After three saves in the first half, Dahlgren deflected six more attempts in the second half. The sophomore's biggest save came in the 54
th minute, deflecting two shots on goal in the same possession, one off a corner kick.
