Bats come to life as Cobra Softball sweeps D-3 power Rock Valley

A day after getting shutout in two disappointing losses, the Parkland Softball team came to life as they swept the two-time defending D-3 National Champions Rock Valley. The Cobras won the opener 10-9 before routing the Golden Eagles 11-3 in the finale. The wins move PC to (22-27) while Rock Valley, who saw their 11 game winning streak end, drops to (39-8).

Game 1:
In a wild game from beginning to end, it was the Cobras who struck last and earned the win. Tied at 9 in the bottom of the 7th, Laura Block doubled off the fence to start the inning. Madyson Butkauskas was brought in to pinch run and Bre Riemenschneider would single to put runners at the corners. Lauren Wendling, who had just return to action after missing over a month due to injury, slapped a single to left to drive in the game winner.

PC had jumped out to an early 5-2 lead as the Cobras used a walk, three hits, and two Eagle errors to score five times in the 2nd. After RVCC tied the game, PC would regain the lead with four runs in the 4th, again taking advantage of errors.  Rock Valley would score three in the 5th to cut the lead to one and tied the game in the 7th with a two out single.  But PC would not be denied as they would win the game in the bottom of the frame. Shelby Youngblood drove in four runs while Lauren Spelich, Wendling, and Block each had two hits.

Game 2:

PC pounded out 14 hits and scored 11 runs as they won by the mercy rule. The Cobras exploded for five runs in the 2nd with Shelby Youngblood driving in a pair. Leading 5-1, PC blew the game open scoring three more times in the 4th. Youngblood drove in another while Block picked up a pair of RBI.

The Golden Eagles scored twice in the top of the 5th to cut the deficit to 8-3 but PC would end the contest by scoring three more times in the bottom of the inning. Brigette Belt cracked a solo home run, and Ivy Nichols and Youngblood each drove in a run. Youngblood went 4-4 in the game and drove in four runs, giving her 8 RBI on the day. Block, Wendling, Belt, and Spelich each collected two hits in the victory.
