NORMAL, Ill. – Sophomore
Mayra Sosa's goal in the 88
th minute broke a scoreless tie, as Parkland defeated Heartland, 1-0, in a Mid-West Athletic Conference match-up on Tuesday. With the win, the Cobras improve to 2-3 on the season.
"Today, the team played poorly, but we were fortunate to get a win," said head coach
Tim Notz. "
Mayra Sosa scored the game-winning goal from 25 yards into the near post in the closing minutes of the game. We'll need to move the ball quicker and player more one-two touch soccer if we're going to make a good run in the playoffs."
Her second goal of the season, Sosa netted her only shot of the match with two minutes remaining to give Parkland its second win, and second shutout, on the early season. In addition to Sosa, the Cobra offense was led by
Beatriz Meneghin's five shots, two on goal, and three shots each by
Kayla Liggett and
Mylena Do Prado.
Sophomore goalie
Kierra Dahlgren recorded her second shutout of the season with four saves to keep the Cobras ahead of Sosa's game-winning goal.
Up next, the Cobras will return home on Thursday, September 13, to take on No. 5 Lewis & Clark at 4 p.m. central time.
