Box Score 2 MELBOURNE, Fla. – Parkland softball dropped a Tuesday, March 12, doubleheader against Division I opponent Eastern Florida State by scores of 8-0 and 5-3. Now 3-3 on the season, the Cobras were led by three-hit days from
Kate Beckemeyer and
Lauren Wendling and two RBI from
Camryn Skundberg.
Adding three hits and two stolen bases to her Florida trip total, freshman pitcher/outfielder
Kate Beckemeyer is batting .632 (12-19) with four RBI and six stolen bases out of the lead-off spot to start the season. Also starting in the circle twice this week, the first-year Cobra boasts a 2.80 ERA with nine strikeouts.
Up next, Parkland softball will have Wednesday off before playing another two games on Thursday back Titusville at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. central time. The Florida trip concludes on Friday with games at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Game 1: Parkland 0, Eastern Florida State 8 (6 inn.)
Starting pitcher
Kate Beckemeyer and centerfielder
Maddie Quattro led the Cobras offensively, each recording two base hits and combining for three stolen bases. Quattro had the lone extra base hit of the game, a double in the second inning and stole second bag of the season, while Beckemeyer stole her fifth and sixth bases of 2019.
The Cobras and Titans each put runners in scoring position in the opening two frames, but both opposing pitchers tiptoed out of danger unscathed.
Kate Beckemeyer reached third base after a leadoff single in the first and
Maddie Quattro doubled with two outs in the second before being stranded, while Beckemeyer escaped a two-on and one-out situation in the first before stranding a one-out double at third base in her second inning of work.
After Beckemeyer's second single of the day to start the third was unable to break the scoreless tie, Eastern Florida State plated two runs in the third inning to take the lead. The Titans then doubled the lead in the fourth inning off reliever
Morgan Parrish.
Parrish held the Titans scoreless in the fifth, but the home team added four runs in the sixth to end the game.
Game 2: Parkland 3, Eastern Florida State 5
Parkland softball rebounded in the fifth inning of game two, scoring three times, and cut the Titan lead to 4-3, but fell short in their comeback bid.
Camryn Skundberg drove in two of the three Cobra runs and
Lauren Wendling got a hit in all three plate appearances to lead the Parkland offense.
After a scoreless first inning, starter Kirbie Mendenahll and Parkland fell behind 3-0 after Eastern Florida State scored once in the second inning and added two more tallies in the third.
Mounting a comeback in the fifth with one out,
Summer Johnson, Wendling and
Kate Beckemeyer strung three singles together to put the Cobras on the board. After the Beckemeyer RBI, Skundberg came to the plate with two outs and singled past the Titan shortstop to plate Wendling and Beckemeyer.
Trailing by one entering the bottom of the fifth, the Cobras were unable to hold the deficit as the Titans used a lead-off double and sac fly to add an insurance run. Wendling's third single of the day with one out in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate, but back-to-back outs ended the rally.
