Cobras Make Quick Work of Southeastern

Cobras win by run-rule twice on Thursday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Parkland softball picked up their fourth and fifth wins of the 2019 season with back-to-back run-rule victories in a Thursday morning doubleheader against Southeastern. The Cobras won 10-1 in six innings in game one, and then took game two by a score of 12-1 in five innings.

Improving to 5-3 on the season, Parkland pounded out 28 hits, including seven extra-base knocks. Hitting .475 as a team, the Cobras had six batters collect at least three hits in the doubleheader, led by five-hit performances from Bri Poehler and Emma Newton. Camryn Skundberg scored a team-high five runs, while Newton drove in four runs to lead the team, including her first home run of the season, and Bella Coffey doubled three times.

In the circle, the Cobras held Southeastern to two runs over 11 innings behind the arms of Morgan Parrish, Tori Witruk and Kirbie Mendenhall. Parrish notched her second win of the season with six innings, giving up one run and striking out four in game one. Witruk followed with four innings of one-run ball and three strikeouts before Mendenhall closed out game two with a scoreless fifth frame.

Up next, Parkland concludes its week in Florida with two games on Friday, March 15. The Cobras open the day against St. Louis at 11 a.m. central time before concluding against ASA Miami College at 4 p.m.

Game 1: Parkland 10, Southeastern 1 (6 inn.)

The Cobras scored four times in the top of the first inning and added three more in the sixth to back six innings from Morgan Parrish in the circle, as Parkland run-ruled Southeastern, 10-1, in six innings.

Five Cobras notched multi-hit games, as the Cobras plated 10 runs on 14 hits. First baseman Bella Coffey produced an RBI double in all three of her at-bats, while right fielder Emma Newton delivered the final blow with her first home run of the season in the sixth for two of her three RBI. Second baseman Tori Witruk tied Coffey with a team-high three hits, while shortstop Kate Beckemeyer and left fielder Bri Poehler added two hits in the victory.

In the circle, Parrish picked up her second win of the season behind six innings of work, striking out four. After allowing a first-inning run, the sophomore right-hander held Southeastern in check the rest of the way, including a hitless final four innings of work.

Scoring four times to give Parrish a lead before she entered the circle, Emma Newton drove in her first run of the day with a sac fly, and then a single by Witruk and a double by Coffey plated two more before Coffey came around to score on a dropped third strike.

Southeastern would get their only run in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to three, but a third-inning double by Coffey would get the run back for a 5-1 advantage. Two innings later, Witruk drove in her second run of the game with a single before a third Coffey double chased Newton home.

Leading 7-1 with Parrish continuing to throw up zeros, the Cobras sparked a two-out rally in the sixth to set up the run-rule victory. With Makenzie Ruppert standing on second base after a lead-off single and a passed ball, Camryn Skundberg drove a pitch up the middle for an RBI single. Emma Newton then followed with the final blow, a two-run home run to center field.

Game 2: Parkland 12, Southeastern 1 (5 inn.)

After pushing 10 runs across in game one, the Cobras picked up where they left off in game two with runs in each of the first four innings in route to a 12-1 win in game two. Pitcher Tori Witruk picked up her first win of the season, while Parkland's 2-3-4 hitters – catcher Bri Poehler, Camryn Skundberg and right fielder Emma Newton – each collected three hits and combined for five RBI.

Making her second start of the trip, Tori Witruk allowed just one run on five hits over four innings while striking out four. After a rocky first inning that saw Witruk allow a run before tight-roping out of a bases-loaded jam, the sophomore hurler pitched three hitless innings with the only blemish coming on an error. Kirbie Mendenhall closed out the win with a scoreless fifth frame and strikeout to end it.

The home team in game two, the Cobras immediately erased a 1-0 Southeastern lead with a four spot in the bottom of the first. After an error and a pair of singles loaded the bases with two out, Bri Poehler scored on an error by the catcher to the tie the game, and then second baseman Summer Johnson doubled home a pair before scoring on the ensuing single by Wendling.

Parkland picked up three runs in both the second and third innings. Three consecutive singles plated two of the three runs in the second with Skundberg and Newton picking up RBI. In the third, Poehler plated a pair on a double before scoring on a second Skundberg RBI single.

Using similar formula from the third, the Cobras used a double followed by a single to add their final two tallies of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maddie Quattro drove in Wendling with a double, and then scored on Kate Beckemeyer's two-out single.
