Game 1: Parkland 13, John Wood 4
The Cobras scored multiple runs in four of the seven innings behind a season-high 23 hits to route John Wood in game one. Catcher
Summer Johnson led Parkland with four hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI, while
Tori Witruk pitched four scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.
With every Cobra hitter reaching base at least once, five Parkland hitters recorded three or more hits over the course of the 23-hit performance. In addition to Johnson's four hits,
Bri Poehler,
Emma Newton,
Bella Coffey and
Kirbie Mendenhall each chipped in three hits. The quintet also combined for four of the team's six extra-base hits.
The 23 hits surpassed the previous season high mark of 18 hits on March 27 against Spoon River, while also marking the 11
th time this season they've reached double-digit hits in a game.
A back-and-forth battle through three-and-a-half innings quickly turned one-sided when Witruk entered the circle in the bottom half of the forth. The sophomore needed just 54 pitches to retire 12 of the 16 Blazers she faced. Despite not recording a strikeout, Witruk kept the ball out of the air, as seven of the 12 outs coming by on groundouts.
The Cobras scored the first two runs in the game in the second inning with an RBI groundout from Mendenhall followed by an error to bring Mendenhall around to score. After John Wood got a run back in their half of the inning, Johnson struck her third homer of the season to extend the lead to 4-1.
With the Blazers again countering with runs in the bottom of the third to tie the score, 4-4, Parkland put together their biggest inning of the game to take the lead back for good. Sparked by a Newton double, six straight Cobra batters recorded hits with Coffey, Johnson Witruk and Mendenhall picking up an RBI in the five-run half-inning.
Witruk entered the game and provided a quick, one-two-three bottom half of the fourth for the first scoreless inning following Parkland runs. A Newton RBI single in the fifth added a 10
th run, and then Coffey, Mendenhall and
Morgan Parrish drove in three more runs in the seventh. All the while, Witruk allowed just three hits over the final four innings.
Game 2: Parkland 8, John Wood 5
Parkland scored eight runs over the final two innings to win in comeback fashion, 8-5, and sweep the Tuesday doubleheader at John Wood.
Emma Newton and
Makenzie Ruppert drove in seven of the eight runs, while Morgan Parish picked up her sixth win on the season.
Newton continued her hot start to the season with two of Parkland's biggest hits of the game. In each of her final two at-bats, the freshman power hitter stepped to the plate with the Cobras down two runs and promptly tied the game. Newton's first swing left the yard in the sixth, and then doubled home the tying runs in the seventh inning. Ruppert joined Newton with a team-high three hits, the last two driving in three runs.
After recording just three hits over the first five innings, the Cobras broke through over the final two innings with nine hits to score three runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh inning to twice battle back from a two-run deficit.
Trailing 2-0, Newton launched her seventh bomb of the season with one-on, one-out in the sixth to tie the game on a ball hit to centerfield.
Bella Coffey kept the rally going with a single, and then a two-out error by the Blazers set the table for a Ruppert RBI single to give the Cobras a 3-2.
The lead was short lived, as the Blazers nullified the Cobras top half with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. However, remaining resilient, Parkland again put together a rally in the seventh inning.
A
Kate Beckemeyer single started the Cobras final at-bat, and then a
Camryn Skundberg hit-by-pitch with one out put the tying run on base. After tying the game in the sixth, Newton stepped to the plate in the seventh and promptly re-tied the game with a double. Coffey and Johnson kept the line moving with singles, the second of which gave the Cobras the lead, 6-5. Continuing to follow a similar script to the sixth, Ruppert lined a two-out hit to right field, tripling in Coffey and Johnson.
Finishing of her second complete game of the season, Parrish set the Blazers down in order to close out the comeback victory, striking out her seventh batter to lead off the inning before a pair of flyouts ended the game.
