Box Score MATTOON, Ill. – No. 4 Parkland College softball fell to No. 3 seed Hartland in a Region 24 Tournament consolation game on Monday afternoon. Taking a 7-3 loss, the Cobras finish their run at the regional tournament with a 1-2 record and a 33-22 overall record on the season. Shortstop
Kirbie Mendenhall led the Cobras with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Winning in dramatic fashion on Friday to advance to the Region 24 Quarterfinal behind a seven-run comeback on a walk-off three-run homer, the Cobras fell to No. 1 seed Illinois Central before dropping Monday's contest to the Hawks. Tournament games on Saturday and Sunday were postponed due rain.
Trailing 7-0, the Cobras scored a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but fell short in its comeback attempt. In the sixth,
Lauren Wendling and
Kate Beckemeyer singled to lead off the inning, and then Wendling came around to score on an error by the Heartland left fielder.
Kirbie Mendenhall brought in the two runs in the seventh with a two-run homer down the right field line.
In the circle,
Tori Witruk started her third straight game of the tournament and then was relieved by
Kate Beckemeyer who struck out five Hawks over five innings while allowing just one run over her final four innings.
Monday's game also marked the end of head coach
Chuck Clutts' 19-year career at the helm of Parkland softball. Guiding the Cobras to eight NJCAA Nationals appearances, including three championship game appearances (2002, 2005 and 2006) in five years. From 2002 through 2009, Parkland placed in the top-10 seven times, including five top-five finishes. Clutts and the Cobras returned to Nationals in 2012 to take third place. Overall, Clutts finishes with 770 wins and owns a .699 winning percentage.
