Cobras Drop Saturday DH to DACC

Camryn Skundberg hits eighth home run

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Parkland softball dropped a doubleheader to Danville Area, 2-1 and 4-2, on Saturday afternoon. The two losses snapped Parkland's eight-game winning streak, as the Cobras moved to 31-19 and 15-7 in conference.

In game one, Danville Area won a pitcher's duel as the Jaguars scored two runs on a two-out single in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead. The Cobras took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out home run by Camryn Skundberg. Witruk took the loss despite pitching a complete game on just 88 pitches and striking out six.

The Cobras scored first in game two on back-to-back hits to start the game, but the Cobras scored single runs in the second and third and then added two more in the fifth to win game two. Left fielder Bri Poehler led the Cobras with three hits and an RBI, while Kate Beckemeyer pitched seven innings with six strikeouts.

Up next, the Cobras conclude the regular season with a Sunday doubleheader against Lewis & Clark at 1 p.m. central time. The Region 24 Tournament begins on Thursday, May 9, in Mattoon, Illinois.

Game 1: Parkland 1, Danville Area 2

Tori Witruk dueled with Danville Area starter Amanda Hartman for seven innings, as neither hurler flinched over the first five innings with just three hits a side. After allowing a lead-off single in the third, Witruk retired 12 straight Jaguars between the third and sixth innings.

Still scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, Camryn Skundberg hit a two-out home run to straight away center to break the tie.

Danville Area battled back in the seventh, scoring two runs on a two-out opposite field single. The Cobras put two runners on with singles by Witruk and Mendenhall in the bottom half, but were unable to push across the tying run.

Game 2: Parkland 2, Danville Area 4

The Parkland offense bounced back early in game two, as back-to-back hits in the bottom of the first pitted the Cobras to an early lead. Kate Beckemeyer slapped a single to left to start the inning, and then scored on an RBI double to right by Bri Poehler.

The Jaguars battled back to take the lead with a run in the top of the second, and then scored an unearned run in the third.

Trailing 4-1 after two more runs by Danville Area in the fifth, the Cobras got a run back in the bottom half. Loading the bases with two singles and a walk, Summer Johnson brought home the run on a sacrifice fly.

Parkland put runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but the Cobras were unable to come from behind.
