No. 17 Cobras Go 1-1 on Day Two of the JUCO Kickoff Classic

Parkland lost 1-0 to Northwest Florida State and defeated Santa Fe College 5-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEARWATER, Fla. – The No. 17 ranked Parkland College Softball team went 1-1 at the JUCO Kickoff Classic on Saturday, January 28th, dropping its first game against Northwest Florida State College 1-0 and defeating Santa Fe College 5-3 in the afternoon. The Cobras (3-1) lost on a walk-off home run to the Raiders before coming from behind to take down the Saints at Eddie C. Moore Park.

"Overall, today was another great day," co-head coach Dan Paulson said. "We are proud of these young ladies and excited to get back to work with them on the field tomorrow."

Game 1: Northwest Florida State College 1, No. 17 Parkland College 0

Freshman Karley Yergler was outstanding in the circle in game one, throwing a no-hitter up until the Northwest Florida State walk-off home run in the bottom of the 7th. She struck out six batters over 6 and 2/3 innings, but the Cobras left multiple runners in scoring position on base and lost 1-0. Yergler went 1-3 at the plate, while Lizzie Stiverson (1-4, SB) and Ellie Vetter (1-2) also singled for the Cobras.

"The 1-0 loss was certainly a heartbreaker, but we are pleased to see how our team has handled these pressure situations," said Paulson after the loss.

Game 2: No. 17 Parkland College 5, Santa Fe College 3

The Cobras trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the 4th, but the team responded with a 5-run inning. Cather Kami Pearson (1-3, 2 RBI, HR) launched a two-run home run before shortstop Lizzie Stiverson (2-4, 2 RBI, 2B) singled to drive in three more and give Parkland the lead. Freshman Ryleigh Owens got her first collegiate win in relief for the Cobras, entering in the 4th and striking out seven over four innings of work. Owens also went 1-3 at the plate, scoring the go-ahead run, and second basemen Emma Mason (2-4) doubled in the 5-3 win.

"Ryleigh Owens was outstanding today," co-head coach Kristi Paulson said after the win.

Up next, the Cobras will face Pasco-Hernando Community College and Daytona State College tomorrow, January 29th, on their final day at the JUCO Kickoff Classic and Showcase.
