No. 4 Parkland Softball Goes 2-0 on Day Two of Hinds JUCO Classic

The Cobras defeat No. 2 Copiah-Lincoln CC and Mississippi Gulf Coast CC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VICKSBURG, Miss. – The No. 4 Parkland College Softball team added two more wins at the Hinds JUCO Classic on Saturday, February 24, defeating No. 2 Copiah Lincoln Community College 6-4 in extra innings and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 5-0. The Cobras (13-3) needed a late rally to take down the Lady Wolves (2-1) in their first game, but a strong showing from the Parkland defense in game two helped the Cobras blank the Bulldogs (10-7) for their sixth consecutive win. Sophomore Emma Mason led the team with 3 RBI on Saturday, as sophomore pitchers Karley Yergler (8-2) and Ellie Vetter (4-1) each earned a win.

"This was a gauntlet of a week coming down here and playing six teams from Region 23," co-head coach Dan Paulson said on Saturday. "In all of Kristi and I's years coaching, we have never been a part of five extra-inning games over an eight-game stretch, and we came out on top in four out of the five. Our ladies really showed up and showed some grit all week."

"Each and every player on this team contributed to the success we had this week," Paulson continued. "We appreciate the opportunity to coach them, and we are excited to get back home and get to work on some things before we head to Orlando in March."

Up next, the Cobras will have some time off before competing in The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, just outside of Orlando. Parkland College opens the 7-day tournament with games against Mott Community College and Mid-Michigan Community College on Saturday, March 9th.

Game 1: No. 4 Parkland College 6, No. 2 Copiah-Lincoln Community College 4 (8 innings)

The Cobras opened the game with back-to-back solo home runs from first baseman Alisha Frederick (2-4, HR) and second baseman Emma Mason (2-3, HR), but the Lady Wolves tied the game in the bottom of the 1st inning with a 2-run double. Parkland threatened to break the tie in the top of 5th, loading the bases with two outs, but the team couldn't take advantage, and Copiah-Lincoln hit a 2-run home run in the bottom half to take a 4-2 lead. The Cobras quickly rallied, as Lizzie Stiverson (1-4, HR, 2 R) launched a solo home run, and Mia Ruder (1-4, RBI) drove in Karley Yergler with an RBI single in the 6th to tie the game 4-4 and force extra innings. In the top of the 8th, left fielder Katy Hendricks (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) lined a 2-RBI double to right field to put Parkland in front, and the Cobras closed out the Lady Wolves in the bottom half to win 6-4.

Starting pitcher Karley Yergler (8.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 9 K) earned her eighth win with the complete game, facing 37 batters in her longest outing of the season.

Game 2: No. 4 Parkland College 5, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 0

Parkland jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning after Emma Mason (1-3, 2B, RBI, R) scored Mia Ruder (1-3, R) and Alisha Frederick (1-3, R) with a 2-RBI double, Lizzie Stiverson (1-3, 2B, RBI, R) brought in Mason with an RBI double, and Ellie Vetter (1-2, 2 RBI) drove in Stiverson with a sacrifice fly. The Cobras added to their lead in the 6th when Vetter scored pinch runner Addie Wallace with an RBI single to right field, and Ryleigh Owens pitched a scoreless 7th inning in relief to finish off the 5-0 win.
