No. 1 Cobras Advance with Shutout Win Over No. 16 Potomac State

Sophomores Karley Yergler and Ellie Vetter pitch a combined no-hitter in the Cobras opening game

Box Score SPARTANBURG, SC. – The No. 1 seed Parkland College Softball team opened its NJCAA Division II Softball World Series run with a 7-0 win over No. 16 seed WVU Potomac State College on Tuesday, May 21st. The Cobras (58-4) allowed just two baserunners versus the Catamounts (37-12) in the shutout victory, as sophomore pitchers Karley Yergler (31-2) and Ellie Vetter combined for a no-hitter in the team's first 2024 NJCAA World Series game. Parkland sophomore Lizzie Stiverson (3-4, 3 RBI, 2 SB) led the team with three RBI in the game, while freshman Alisha Frederick (2-3, 2 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R) tallied a team-high six total bases with two triples in the win.
 
Up next, Parkland takes on No. 9 seed St. Johns River State College tomorrow, May 22nd, in the Third Round of the NJCAA DII Softball World Series. First pitch against the Lady Vikings (51-15) is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST at Tyger River Park.

The Cobras got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a Stiverson RBI single to left field, and the number one overall seed doubled its lead in the 2nd when Addie Wallace (1-2, RBI, SB) grounded an RBI single up the middle to score Lexie Griffin (1-3, R).
 
Parkland added to its lead in the bottom of the 5th, as Alisha Frederick lined an RBI triple to right, and Stiverson brought her home with another RBI single to left, putting the Cobras up 4-0. In the 6th, Mia Ruder (3-4, RBI, 2 R) grounded an RBI single to the second baseman – Frederick lashed another RBI triple to score pinch-runner Kallie Evans, and Stiverson drove Frederick in again to extend the lead to 7-0.
 
In the circle, starter Yergler (6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 12 K, BB) settled in after hitting a batter in the top of the first, allowing just one walk and no hits in six innings of work, striking out 12. In the top of the 7th, Ellie Vetter (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 K) struck out the side to seal the deal, and the Cobras closed out the 7-0 win to advance.
