#9 Parkland Baseball sweeps #2 Heartland, put an end to Hawks 18 game winning streak

A day after losing a pair of hard fought battles to the rival Hawks, on Saturday it was the Cobras turn to do the sweeping, as they defeated Heartland 7-1 and 6-2 to stop the Hawks winning streak at 18 games. Most importantly, the wins keep PC in the race for the M-WAC title and the #1 over-all seed in the Region 24 Tournament.  Parkland improves to (26-10 14-4) with the two victories while Heartland falls to (32-7 19-5). The Cobras will be off on Sunday before traveling to John Wood on Monday for a make-up doubleheader against the Blazers.

Game 1:

Luke Smith went the distance, holding the Hawks to just one run on three hits, while the Cobra offense scored early and often to earn the win. Smith improved to (5-1) as he gave up just a single run in the 4th as he walked three and struck out six. PC jumped out quickly scoring three times in the 1st and four more in the 3rd.  Brendan Joyce got things started with a single and he came all the way around to score on Trevor Minder's triple. Trystin Raikes drove Minder home with a single while Max Downs and Tyler Paulsen also drove in runs in the inning.  The Cobras used the long ball in the 3rd as Paulsen's three-run homer, his team leading 9th on the season, made it 6-0 and Nick Wisz followed with his 3rd home run of the year.  That would be all the runs Smith would need as PC ended the Hawks winning streak with the victory.

Game 2:

Three Cobra hurlers limited the Hawks to just two runs on three hits and Parkland once again used the home run to earn the win.  PC got on the board in the 2nd as Wisz and Max Downs walked and Paulsen followed with an RBI single. Two more runs would score via an error by the Hawks shortstop. Trystin Raikes made it 4-0 in the 3rd as he hit is 8th round tripper of the year.  Heartland threatened to get right back in the game in the 4th as they quickly loaded the bases with nobody out.  A long double off the left field wall made it 4-2 and left the tying runs on 2nd and 3rd with still no outs.  The next play may have turned the whole game around as the Hawks hit a fly ball to medium left field which appeared to be deep enough to chase home another Heartland run. However, PC alertly appealed that the runner left early, and the home plate umpired agreed, as he called the runner out and PC was able to wiggle out of the inning with no more runs scoring.

PC would add salt to the Hawks wound as they quickly got those two runs back in the bottom of the frame as Joyce doubled and Connor Aube crushed his 4th home run of the season to make it 6-2. Both teams would threaten to score over the final three innings but could not plate any more runs. Jack Lambert worked four solid innings to pick up the win and improve to (3-0).  Ty McCulloch worked a perfect 5th and 6th innings not allowing a hit while striking out three. Tom Cheshareck was called on to close things out and after the first two hitters reached on an error and a walk, he settled down to retire the next three hitters to preserve the win.
