Box Score 2 VICKSBURG, Miss. – No. 2 Parkland baseball split a doubleheader on Saturday, defeating No. 1 LSU-Eunice (7-1) before dropping the second game at East Central Mississippi (3-2). With the Saturday split, the Cobras are now 2-2 on the season. Originally scheduled to play a pair of games at Jones County on Sunday, the doubleheader was canceled due to rain.
Leading the way for the Cobras in the doubleheader was
Trevor Burkhart with three hits and two runs out of the leadoff spot in the win over LSU-Eunice and shortstop
Trevor Minder's five hits, two RBI and a stolen base over the course of the two games. Starting the opener against LSU-Eunice,
Ryan Culley picked up his first win of the season with four shutout innings.
No. 2 Parkland 7, No. 1 LSU-Eunice 1
A rematch of the 2018 NJCAA Division II World Series, the Cobras knocked off the defending champs with a second-inning home run and then a pair of three-run innings in the fifth and seventh innings.
After a scoreless first inning, third basemen
Alex Steinbach blasted his first homer of the season to give the Cobras an early 1-0 lead.
Following four no-hit innings from starter
Ryan Culley, Parkland added insurance runs in the fifth inning with a
Justin Dunne single followed by a
Robert Barnard RBI double and a RBI single from Burkhart. A wild pitch brought in
Trevor Burkhart for the third run of the inning.
Relieving Culley, Castro pitched 1.2 innings while only giving up on unearned run. Leading 4-1 entering the seventh, Parkland again put a three spot on the board with an RBI double by
Corey Price and RBI triple from Minder. Getting the final out of the sixth and then closing out the seventh, Keegan McHood picked up his first save of the season to close out the win over the top-ranked Bengals.
No. 2 Parkland 2, East Central CC 3
The Cobras scored twice in the sixth inning, but couldn't overcome three unearned runs in the first inning against East Central. The Cobras were led by two hits apiece from
Trevor Minder and
Damian Pierce.
Trailing 3-0 entering the sixth inning, the Cobras mounted a rally off an error and a wild pitch to trim the lead to 3-2. However, despite the bases still loaded, the Cobras were unable to push across the game-tying run.
Parkland again had opportunities to tie and take the lead in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, the East Central right fielder made back-to-back spectacular plays to throw out a Cobra runner advancing to third, and then robbed Steinbach of a go-ahead double. In the ninth inning, East Central picked off a Cobra runner in scoring position with one out in the ninth.
Despite not allowing an earned run,
Sam Ballard took the loss with three runs over five innings. Ballard struck out seven while allowing seven hits.
Ty Rybarczyk relieved Ballard and tossed three scoreless frames while punching out three.
With Sunday's doubleheader at Jones County rained out, Parkland's next game will be on Saturday, March 9, in Vincennes, Indiana against Vincennes and Schoolcraft.
