Ricky Castro earned the win for Parkland – improving to 4-2 on the season – going four innings while allowing two runs and striking out three.
Chase Gockel and
Jake Rosing worked the final five innings, allowing just one run on four hits. On offense, designated hitter
Tyler Grigalis, left fielder
Jeremiah Lebron and third baseman
Alex Steinbach each recorded two hits, while
Tynan Shahidi came off the bench to lead the team with two RBI.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the middle of the Parkland order ignited 2-out rally with back-to-back extra-base hits. Left fielder
Jeremiah Lebron doubled to start the rally, and then scored the first run when third baseman
Alex Steinbach tripled off the wall in left field. First baseman Dan Warkentin brought Steinbach the final 90 feet with a single to left, and then moved to third when the bases were loaded on a walk to Trevor Mindre and a hit-by-pitch to
Robert Barnard.
Tied 2-2 with the bases juiced, designated hitter
Tyler Grigalis battled and worked a go-ahead walk to give Parkland the lead. The seventh straight hitter to reach,
Tynan Shahidi pinch hit for
Mike Hampton and singled home two more runs to cap the five-run frame.
After allowing two runs in the top of the second, Castro and Gockel bared down with five straight scoreless innings to keep Parkland in front. Castro worked around two lead-off runners in the fourth to finish his day, and then turned the ball over to
Chase Gockel who worked three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. In the seventh, Gockel pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation with a strikeout and groundout to escape the jam.
Heartland scratched a run across in the eighth against Parkland's second reliever of the day,
Jake Rosing. Still threatening with the tying runs on base, Rosing worked out of trouble with a strikeout and fielder's choice. After
Corey Price got the run back with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth, Rosing returned to the hill in the ninth and closed out the win with two flyouts and punch out.
