No. 20 Cobras Go 1-1 on Day Two at Mtn Dew Park Open

Parkland loses a rematch against South Suburban and defeats SWIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARION, Ill. – The No. 20 Parkland College Baseball team wrapped up the Mtn Dew Park Open with a walk-off loss to South Suburban College and a walk-off win over Southwestern Illinois College. The Cobras (6-5) fell to the Bulldogs (6-4) in a rematch on a walk-off 2-RBI double, but they returned the favor versus the Blue Storm (8-7) in game two, as freshman Will Applegate launched a pinch-hit walk-off two-run home run to close the weekend with a dramatic win.
 
Up next, the Cobras will host two games versus North Iowa Area Community College at the Rantoul Sports Complex on Friday, March 8th. First pitch against the Trojans (5-9) is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
 
South Suburban College 3, No. 20 Parkland College 2
 
Parkland fell behind 1-0 on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 4th but countered right away when Tylor Phommachanhom (2-3, RBI) lined an RBI single to right field in the 5th, scoring Andrew Gallegos. The Cobras took their first lead in the 6th inning, going up 2-1 on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Filip, but the Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the 7th, lifted a walk-off 2-RBI double out to left field to hand Parkland a 3-2 loss.
 
Starting pitcher Jaxon Christensen (0-2) allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks, striking out seven in 6 and 1/3 innings on Saturday. Sophomore Freddie Elftmann replaced Christensen after 96 pitches, facing one batter in the walk-off loss. Third basemen Will Flanigan (2-3, R, SB) tied Phommachanhom for the team lead in hits, and fellow sophomores Josh Outlaw (1-3) and Charlie Marisca (1-2) each singled in the game.
 
No. 20 Parkland College 7, Southwestern Illinois College 6
 
The Cobras trailed early again after the Blue Storm drove in two in the top of the 1st, but a two-out rally in the bottom half put Parkland up 4-2 heading into the 2nd inning. SWIC scored one in the top half, but sophomore Ryan Snell (1-3, HR, 2 R, BB) answered with a solo home run to left field to push the lead to 5-3. The Blue Storm kept the offense rolling, scoring three in the 3rd to take a 6-5 lead before both defenses tightened up. Still trailing 6-5 with one out in the bottom of the 7th, sophomore Will Flanigan walked, and pinch-hitter Will Applegate stepped up to launch his second home run of the season and win the game for Parkland, 7-6.
 
Freshman Michael Carrano Jr. (2-2, 3B, 2 RBI, R) led the team in hits, including an RBI triple in the 1st inning, and sophomore infielders Nate Bingman (1-2, RBI, R, BB) and Tylor Phommachanhom (1-3, RBI) each knocked in a run in the win.
 
Sophomore starter Sam Bryan (1/3 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 2 BB) was chased from the game in the 1st inning, replaced by sophomore John Cederberg (2.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 K) before Cale Coursey (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) calmed things down on the mound. Freshman Mike Boyce (1-0) earned a win in his career debut, striking out two in a shutout 7th inning.
