Box Score 2 CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Parkland College Baseball team picked up two more wins in a doubleheader at home against Carl Sandberg College on Monday, April 14th. The Cobras (26-11) needed a 6th-inning comeback to defeat the Chargers (10-21) in game one, 10-7, before running away with an 11-1 win in five innings in game two. Redshirt freshman
Scott Newman led the team with four hits and 4 RBI on Monday.

Up next, Parkland finishes its homestand with a conference doubleheader against Lewis & Clark Community College on Saturday, April 20th. First pitch against the Trailblazers (22-20) (8-12) is scheduled for noon at the Parkland College Baseball Field.

Carl Sandberg got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 2nd inning, and Parkland tied the game with a sac fly of its own in the 3rd. Center fielder
Scott Newman gave the Cobras the lead with a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the 4th, and sophomore
Luke Parmentier (1-3, 2 RBI) lifted his second sacrifice fly of the game to take a 4-1 lead.

Both teams drove in a run in the 5th before the Chargers roared back with five runs in the top of the 6th, taking a 7-5 lead, but the Cobras didn't take long to answer. Freshman
Will Applegate (2-4, R, BB) scored on a wild pitch to begin the rally in the bottom of the 6th, and a pinch-hit 2-RBI single from
Jacob Filip put Parkland up 8-7. Newman (4-4, 3B, 2B, 4 RBI, R) knocked in two more runs later in the inning to extend the lead, and the Cobras closed out the 10-7 win with a three-up, three-down top of the 7th inning.

Will Richardson III (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) sat down six batters in his first start of the season. Sophomore
Alex Vertuno (3-0) earned the win following 1 and 1/3 innings of work, striking out three – and sophomore
Tylor Phommachanhom got the save on Monday afternoon, taking the mound for the final out of the game.

Parkland opened the scoring on a
Jacob Filip (1-1, RBI, R) RBI single in the bottom of the 1st inning, and the hosts added two runs on an error and sac fly in the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead. Carl Sandberg got one back in the top of the 3rd – but Parkland put together a 6-run, 2-out rally in the bottom half to take a commanding 9-1 lead, capped by a
Josh Outlaw (1-3, RBI) RBI single to center field.

Nate Bingman (3 R, 2 BB) and
Scott Newman (2 R, BB) extended the lead in the 4th, scoring on an error to go up 11-1, and sophomore reliever
Hunter Pudlo (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K) pitched a scoreless top of the 5th to close out the win.
