Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 18 Parkland women's basketball team overcome a late, fourth-quarter rally from Southeastern (Iowa) to win, 71-70, in overtime on Saturday at the Donald Dodds Athletic Complex. Sophomore forward
Micah Tapscott led the team with 18 points off the bench, including eight of the team's 11 points in overtime, as head coach
Mike Lindemann's team improved to 1-1 on the season.
Joining Tapscott in double figures, forward
Alex Specht dropped in 12, on 6-9 shooting, and guard
Crystal Mathis added in 11 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Point guard
Olivia Babcock directed the offense to a 46.8% shooting performance with eight assists, while also contributing nine points of her own.
Trailing 65-63 a minute into overtime, Tapscott provided the decisive rally with three jump shots in two minutes to give the Cobras the lead for good, and then added in a fourth from the right baseline with seven seconds left. The final bucket by Tapscott proved vital, giving the Cobras a three-point lead before the Blackhawks responded with a layup as time expired.
A see-saw battle to open the game, the Cobras fell behind the Blackhawks, 11-9, at the end of the first quarter, and by as much as six early in the second quarter. However, trailing 17-11, the Cobras went on a 10-0 run midway through the second period to take the lead behind post touches for
Cassie Russo, Tapscott and
Madelyn Brouwer. Four more points from Tapscott to end the half sent the Cobras into the break with a 25-23 lead.
Coming out of the locker room, the Cobras had their best period offensively with 22 points on 66.7% shooting, stretching their two-point halftime lead to nine points after three quarters. Specht and Mathis led the charge with six points apiece, while Babcock tallied five more, including three crucial free throws following a Southeastern foul as time expired.
The Cobras carried the momentum into the start of the fourth quarter, building the lead to 13 points with 6:48 left in the game. Still leading by 10, 60-50, with 1:45 left, the Blackhawks converted free throws and a three-pointer at the buzzer to finish off a 10-0 run to send the game into overtime.
A
Gemma Recasens free throw broke the tie in overtime, and then, following a Southeastern three, Specht scored a layup to retie the game. The visitors took the lead one last time, 65-63, before four Tapscott buckets gave the Cobras the victory.
