Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Parkland women's basketball team outscored No. 10 Lincoln Land from the second quarter onward, but couldn't overcome the first-quarter deficit, dropping the M-WAC battle 74-60 on Monday night. Guards Gemma Rescasens and
Olivia Babcock each scored in double figures for the Cobras, tallying 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
Trailing 26-7 after the opening quarter, Parkland outscored the 10
th ranked Loggers by five over the remaining 30 minutes, including winning the second and third quarters. Cutting the deficit to as close as eight points early in the fourth quarter, the Cobra rally was sparked by better than 50-percent shooting in the second (9-18) and third (9-14) quarters.
Defensively, the Parkland defense frustrated the Loggers to a tune of 27 turnovers which was 17 more than Lincoln Land's season average of 10.4 per game. The Loggers also shot below their season average of 51 percent, hitting just 42.6 percent of its shots.
Along with guard production from Rescasens (13 points, five assists) and Babcock (11 points, four assists), Parkland's posts just missed reaching double figures with Tapscott netting eight points while
Emily Meinert added nine off the bench.
Cassie Russo was the Cobras' leading rebounder with eight boards, including five on the offensive glass.
Coming out of the first-quarter break, Parkland responded in the second period by outscoring the ranked Loggers by six points, 21-15. Highlighting the second-quarter success was an 11-0 run late in the quarter. Trailing 38-17, the Cobras reeled off points on four straight possessions, including two three pointers, to cut the lead to 10 points. A Lincoln Land three with 22 seconds left pushed the lead back out to 41-28 heading into the half.
Continuing to cut down on the mistakes in the second half, Parkland won the third period by a count of 23-20 to cut the deficit to 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. After Lincoln land hit a trio of triples to start the third, Parkland responded with a 17-11 run to end the quarter. Leading the effort were post production from
Micah Tapscott and
Emily Meinert, while Gemma Rescasens and
Crystal Mathis added in jumpers.
Mathis got the Cobras going again in the fourth quarter with a put-back jumper on the first possession, cutting the deficit to single digits for the first time since midway through the first quarter. However, Lincoln land would hold Parkland to just seven points in the final nine minutes to hold off the Cobra comeback attempt.
Parkland will look to bounce back on Wednesday, February 4, with another top-10 contest at No. 2 Illinois Central in East Peoria, Ill.
