Cobras Defeat Morton College on Sophomore Day, 5-4 in Overtime

Cobras complete the comeback in thrilling fashion, winning on a golden goal with three minutes to go

Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Parkland College women's soccer team won a thrilling game against Morton College in overtime on Sophomore Day, Tuesday. Izzy Fritz scored twice, including the game-tying penalty kick in the 89th minute, and Milly Machinchy scored the game-winning goal with just 2:50 remaining in overtime to give the Cobras the exciting 5-4 win.

Said head coach Dan Vogelsang after the game, "What a performance by everyone on this team and believing in themselves and their teammates. Words can't express how proud I am of this team and their efforts in today's win."

The Cobras (4-9-1) stumbled out of the gate, allowing three early goals, and having to substitute Becky Painter, the starting goalkeeper, due to illness, but Caris White's 36th minute goal helped keep the Panthers (5-2-3) within striking distance at halftime.

Sophomore Allie Scally got the second half started with a 53rd minute goal, but Morton wasn't done yet, scoring their fourth goal in the 60th. Scally helped set up Izzy Fritz's 77th minute goal to make it 4-3 and all of the sudden the pressure was fully on the Panthers. Fritz had a chance to tie it late in the game before she was tripped in the box on a breakaway in the last few minutes. Fritz kept her composure despite the foul and buried the clutch penalty kick in the 89th minute to send the game to overtime.

"During the break heading into overtime I told this team to reach deep and give it everything they had. We were going to go for the win and continue the attack. This team did just that and left everything on the field."

Milly Machinchy was the hero on Tuesday night, burying the winning goal on an assist from Elise Hertling in the 97th minute to give the Cobras the win on a golden goal. Dana Jarden finished with 8 saves in relief of Becky Painter.

"The plan was to play defensive to start the second half to see what changes Morton made and then we were going to attack," revealed Vogelsang after the win. Once we moved to the attack, we dominated this game and kept the pressure up and finally tied the game."
