Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Parkland College women's soccer team could not capitalize on a 60
th minute penalty kick and it came back to bite them, losing to the East Central College Falcons 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons scored the deciding breakaway goal in the 84th minute and handed the Cobras their 5th home loss of the season.
Â
"Today's loss was tough given we did so many things right," said head coach
Dan Vogelsang after the loss. "We maintained possession for 51% of the game, led in shots, dominated on 50/50 balls and had the momentum in our favor. Unfortunately, we just couldn't find the back of the net."Â
Â
The Cobras (3-9-0) played strong defense all afternoon, choosing to sit back and prevent East Central from getting ahead early. The game remained scoreless at halftime and neither team looked to have the upper hand. The Falcons opened the door for the Cobras in the 60
th minute, when one of their defenders was called for a handball in the box, but
Allie Scally's penalty kick was saved by the goalkeeper. Not too long after, East Central finally broke through Parkland's defense in the 84
th minute, finishing off a cross from the near sideline for the only goal in the game. Becky Painter had 7 saves in the loss.
Â
Vogelsang added, "After our last game we had to make some needed changes and I am so proud of how this team responded to those changes."
Â
Up next, Parkland heads to Quincy, IL this Saturday, October 9
th for a conference game against John Wood Community College. That game is scheduled to kickoff at 12:00PM.
