No. 5 Cobras Have Season Ends in 4-0 Loss at National Tournament

Parkland finishes the season 15-4-1

Box Score WICHITA, KS. – The Parkland men's soccer team lost at the NJCAA DII National Tournament on Wednesday night, falling 4-0 to eighth-seeded Georgia Military College. The loss marks the end of the Cobras 2021 season, which ends at the national tournament for the first time since 2016.

After the game, head coach Mark Sikora said, "What a crazy ride this season has been, with the normal stressors that come with high level competition, getting a team to gel and perform, etc., but also with COVID-19 and community issues that have surrounded the Parkland College community. All told, the coaching staff could not be more proud of this group and what they have accomplished. They achieved things that we come to expect from Parkland Athletics, things that are far from ordinary,"

The Cobras (15-4-1) gave up two early goals and struggled to respond. The Bulldogs (14-2-1) were one of the hottest Division II teams in the country, having come into Tuesday night's game on a 13-game win streak and fresh off a district championship and it showed. The score remained 2-0 at halftime. The second half began just as the first did, with a Julian Rivera goal, his second of the night. Eight minutes later he had completed his hat trick and the game was in hand. The Cobras pulled Matteo Gigliozzi, their starting goalkeeper, in the 64th minute and Parkland had its season end with a crushing 4-0 defeat.

Scoring Summary:
Georgia Military Goal: Julian Rivera 9' (Assisted by Nicolas Milot)
Georgia Military Goal: Adrian Gallegos 14' (Unassisted)
Georgia Military Goal: Julian Rivera 46' (Unassisted)
Georgia Military Goal: Julian Rivera 54' (Unassisted)

"While the end was not what we hoped, we got to the national tournament and etched our name in the soccer history books, something that players and coaches rarely get to do in their career," Sikora shared. "The team also became the talk of the event with their second half performance in their first match. The end will sting for a while, but we made some fantastic memories."
