Cobras Lose 68-67 to DACC in the Region 24 Quarterfinals

The Cobras finish the year 18-9

Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Parkland women's basketball team's season came to a close on Wednesday night, as the Cobras lost 68-67 to Danville Area Community College in the NJCAA Region 24 Quarterfinals. The Cobras held a late 67-61 lead, but the Jaguars closed the game on a 7-0 run and stunned last years' third-place finishers. Naomi McDaniel (20 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) led the Cobras in scoring and rebounding and Mady Harper (9 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) distributed the ball well in the loss.

"This was not the way we envisioned our season ending and I believe our extremely tough schedule finally caught up to us," head coach Allie Lindemann recalled after the loss. "I have to give all of the credit to the young women who showed up every day through all kinds of adversity, worked hard, were always bought in, and always did it together. I'm proud of this team and all that we stood for."

The Cobras (18-9) offense started out hot, shooting 69% from the field in the first quarter and taking a 10-point lead with 27 seconds left in the first before a late three-pointer by the Jaguars (13-14) made the score 25-18 at the end of one. Rhiannon Skoog stepped up off the bench for Parkland in the first quarter, scoring nine points and going 5-6 from the free throw line. DACC opened the second quarter with another three and the game tightened up at the end of the first half. The Jaguars cut the Cobras lead down to one point on multiple occasions, but Parkland held onto the lead and went into halftime up 40-37.
Naomi McDaniel got the scoring started in the second half, completing a three-point play just under a minute into it, and Parkland took their largest lead of the game, 53-41, with 4:09 remaining in the third quarter. Both teams increased their defensive intensity as the quarter ended and, after two Sarah Isaf free throws with 42 seconds to go, the Cobras led 58-49 going into the fourth. DACC slowly cut into Parkland's lead in the fourth quarter as the Cobras struggled to put the Jaguars away. The Cobras called a timeout with 1:15 remaining leading 65-61 and Naomi McDaniel scored an easy layup on the ensuing out-of-bounds play, but the Jaguars closed the game on a 7-0 run and stunned the Cobras 68-67 in the Region 24 quarterfinals. DACC outscored Parkland 19-9 in the fourth quarter.
