Box Score CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Parkland College women's soccer team continued their strong start to the season on Sunday, August 28th, defeating 8th-ranked South Suburban College 5-4 in Champaign. The Cobras found themselves tied 2-2 at halftime before pulling away from the Bulldogs in the second half, thanks to four goals from freshmen
Faith Niebrugge. Two late South Suburban goals put the pressure on, but Parkland's defense held strong to come out on top and secure the Cobras' first win over a ranked opponent since 2017.
"All week, the girls had high intensity," head coach
Dan Vogelsang said satisfyingly after the win. "Today they came out, played with high intensity. As I told them, I can't be more proud of what they've accomplished."
The Cobras (2-0-0) struck early, as
Faith Niebrugge found the back of the net in the 4th minute, scoring on a through ball from
Athenais Ouairy. Niebrugge was not done, however, scoring again in the 9th to give Parkland a 2-0 lead over South Suburban. The Bulldogs (0-1-1) provided an answer in the 20th minute, scoring from a free kick just outside the Cobras' box to get on the board. South Suburban leveled the game at 2-2 with just under 10 minutes to go in the first half, counter attacking quickly to tie the game before halftime. Parkland played with a purpose in the beginning stages of the second half. Cobras freshmen
Faith Niebrugge scored twice more to give the Mattoon native her second four-goal game in as many appearances before
Athenais Ouairy added another goal to give the home side a 5-2 lead. The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Cobras' back line, finding the back of the net twice in the closing stages, but it was not enough as Parkland College upsets 8
th-ranked South Suburban 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Up next, Parkland will travel to Kankakee on Wednesday, August 31st for a matchup against Kankakee Community College. The Cobras are set to kick off against the Cavaliers (0-0-1) at 5:00 PM.
