No. 13 Parkland Women’s Basketball Win 80-64 in Conference Opener

Jennifer Heinberg scores 20 in the second half to help the Cobras win their fourth straight

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 13 ranked Parkland College women's basketball team battled back from a first-half deficit in an 80-64 win over conference foe Danville Area Community College on Wednesday, January 18th. The Cobras caught fire from beyond the arc, shooting over 56 percent from three while holding the Jaguars to just 23 percent from deep. Freshman Alyssa Cole (24 points, 9 rebounds) led all scorers, and sophomore Jennifer Heinberg (23 points) buried a season-high five threes in the Cobras' first win in conference play.

The Cobras (14-1) (1-0) struggled against the Jaguars (8-6) (0-2) press early in the game, and the team trailed 22-16 at the end of the first quarter. Parkland managed to stay within striking distance throughout the first half, and with 2:05 remaining, Alyssa Cole converted an and-one to tie the game 35-35. The two defenses tightened up in the closing stages of the half, and DACC held a 37-35 lead at the break. Four minutes into the third quarter, sophomore Jennifer Heinberg hit back-to-back threes to give the Cobras a 45-39, but the Jaguars would not go quietly, cutting the Parkland lead down to 55-52 going into the fourth. The game remained close early in the fourth, but the Cobra defense stepped up during a six-minute, 15-0 run, and Parkland hit its final nine free throws to take home an 80-64 win over DACC. Heinberg was the hero on Wednesday night, scoring 20 second-half points in the Cobras' fourth straight win.
