CHAMPAIGN, Ill.— On March 15, 1986, history was written for Parkland College men's basketball. That day, the Cobras captured the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship with an 88-72 victory over Keystone College of Pennsylvania. Forty years later, the championship team remains one of the most accomplished squads in program history—and on February 18, they will be honored for their monumental achievement.
Led by head coach Tom Cooper, who guided the program from 1978 to 1992, the 1985-86 Cobras compiled a remarkable 31-7 overall record. They went 5-1 in conference play and demonstrated consistency across every environment—finishing 15-2 at home, 9-3 on the road, and 7-2 in neutral-site contests. The team closed its championship season riding an 11-game winning streak, peaking at exactly the right time.
The title game showcased Parkland's depth, discipline, and defensive intensity. Facing Keystone College on the national stage, the Cobras executed with precision to secure the 16-point victory and bring the national trophy back to Champaign.
The roster featured several standout performers who played pivotal roles throughout the season and championship run. Terrance Gray (Chicago, IL), Jeff Lewis (Champaign, IL), Scott Kraft (Princeville, IL), and Mike Rombout (Chicago, IL) each made significant contributions. Terry Cook (Decatur, IL) emerged as a key catalyst — leading the team in steals and assists, ranking second in scoring, and anchoring the Cobras' championship push with his all-around performance. Corky Card (Crystal Lake, IL) also provided valuable production during the historic campaign.
The 1985-86 team's national title remains a defining chapter in Parkland Athletics history. Their discipline, teamwork, and relentless drive set the standard for future Cobra squads and cemented their legacy within the NJCAA ranks.
On February 18, fans will have the opportunity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that championship season as the 1986 team returns to be recognized at the men's basketball game. It will be an evening dedicated to honoring a group whose achievements continue to inspire generations of Cobras.
